Originating from my thesis about the formation of identity for Black women in the Black community, this personal project became a virtual event series and platform for Black women and femmes to discuss identity. ✨

The Research

During a 10-week period, I conducted many forms of research. From conversational interviews to surveying 22 Black women in a focus group, it led me deeper into my research. I learned about event planning from various community organizers, had deeply personal conversations, and listened to Black female musicians and podcasts while reading books and journals rooted in the Black identity.

How does the world view Black women?

“They want the girls with the hips […] Want the girls with the lips / And the cascading hair” - Willow, Pretty Girlz

“I’m weary of the ways of the world […] And, ‘Do I belong’ / ‘I do, I do’” - Solange, Weary

Have stereotypes affected your identity?

“I get older and push everything down. I don’t feel Black enough, pretty enough, not confident enough, I’m always feeling worried about being perfect. I’m 20 and start taking medicine for high blood pressure.”

— NK from The Heart Podcast "Divesting From People Pleasing”

“It occurs when a person takes on characteristics they believe to be opposite of those expected of their cultural or social group. In essence, cultural dissemblance is a coping strategy used to actively reject negative, offensive, or stereotypical characteristics.”

How do Black women cope with societal pressures?

We simply don’t conform, we express pride.

“It really saddens me when we’re not allowed to express that pride in being Black.”

— Solange, Tina Taught Me

“I’m sorry I’m not more ladylike / I’m sorry I don’t shave my legs at night.”

— Sza, Drew Barrymore

How can we be empowered?

Spend time with other individuals who we have similar experiences with,
who can uplift us when we’re feeling fragile.

“I radiate my power / With a squad of sunflowers (that’s the gang) […] Your light is not a weakness”

— Oshun, Solar Plexus

“Don’t fear the light that dwells deep within / You are powerful beyond what you imagine”

— Noname, Reality Check

The Conclusion

Soul Soak needs to be a community that can have open discussions.
It embraces you with open arms after you've been away for a long time.
